The company is an established specialty chemicals manufacturer, serving customers across multiple international markets and operating within a broader multinational group with a presence in more than 50 countries.

The role will have broad leadership responsibility, combining strategic direction, commercial development, operational performance, people leadership, and stakeholder management.

The successful candidate will take overall responsibility for establishing the local organization, leading the restart and ramp-up of the production facility, building the management structure, and delivering sustainable business growth.
As the senior-most executive in Uruguay, the Managing Director will have full responsibility for the local business and P&L , reporting directly to Group Headquarters and ensuring that the local operation is fully aligned with the Group's strategy, governance framework, policies, and performance expectations.
The role offers the opportunity to shape an organization from the ground up while playing a critical role in its long-term development and international growth.

Key Responsibilities
- Business Set-Up, Strategy & Organizational Leadership
- Lead the establishment and development of the Uruguay operation from the ground up.
- Build the local management team, organizational structure, governance model, and operating processes.
- Translate Group strategy into local business plans, priorities, and execution plans.
- Establish a high-performance, accountable, and collaborative organizational culture.
- Ensure local decisions and practices are aligned with Group policies and Delegation of Authority requirements.
- Plant Restart & Operational Excellence
- Lead the safe, efficient, and sustainable restart and ramp-up of the production facility.
- Ensure production readiness, workforce capability, maintenance, raw material availability, and supply chain continuity.
- Monitor key operational KPIs covering production, quality, cost, efficiency, reliability, and delivery.
- Drive continuous improvement, productivity, asset reliability, and cost optimization.
- Ensure robust business continuity and contingency plans are in place.
- Financial, Commercial & Business Performance
- Assume full P&L responsibility for the Uruguay entity.
- Lead annual budgeting, forecasting, operating planning, and capital expenditure planning.
- Monitor revenue, costs, cash flow, working capital, profitability, and overall business performance.
- Support the Global Head of Sales in business development and commercial strategy, with direct responsibility for local commercial matters.
- Identify market insights to support pricing strategies and new market opportunities.
- Identify growth opportunities and cost-saving initiatives through effective monitoring of operational and commercial performance.
- People, Organization & Labor Relations
- Partner with HR and Group HR to build the required workforce and organizational capabilities.
- Lead the recruitment and appointment of key leadership and critical positions.
- Establish effective workforce planning, performance management, succession planning, and talent development processes.
- Foster constructive employee and labor relations.
- Lead significant employee relations, collective bargaining, workforce restructuring, and industrial relations matters.
- Ensure major labor-related decisions are appropriately coordinated with Group Headquarters.
- ESG, HSE, Regulatory & Compliance
- Demonstrate visible leadership and accountability for ESG and Health, Safety & Environment standards.
- Ensure full compliance with applicable laws, regulations, permits, and corporate governance requirements.
- Drive sustainability initiatives, including resource efficiency, carbon footprint reduction, and community engagement.
- Maintain oversight of environmental, labor, ethical, operational, and reputational risks.
- Establish robust internal controls, ESG reporting mechanisms, and compliance practices.
- Escalate material compliance, ethical, ESG, or operational risks to Group Headquarters in a timely manner.
- External Stakeholder & Government Relations
- Represent the company before government authorities, regulators, industry bodies, local institutions, and other key stakeholders.
- Develop constructive relationships with public authorities, business partners, and relevant institutions.
- Manage external matters that may affect licenses, operations, workforce, reputation, or future growth.
- Coordinate material governmental and institutional commitments with Group Headquarters.
- Supply Chain, Investments & Business Continuity
- Ensure reliable procurement, logistics, inventory, supplier, and contractor management processes in coordination with Group Headquarters.
- Monitor critical raw materials, utilities, logistics, and supplier dependencies.
- Identify capital investment requirements related to restart, modernization, compliance, and growth.
- Ensure approved investment projects are delivered within agreed scope, budget, timeline, and quality standards.
- Maintain effective business continuity and risk mitigation plans.
- Governance & Group Reporting
- Act as the primary liaison between the Uruguay operation and Group Headquarters.
- Provide transparent and timely reporting on financial, operational, commercial, HR, HSE, regulatory, and strategic matters.
- Ensure material decisions are escalated and approved in accordance with Group governance and approval requirements.
- Keep Group Headquarters informed and aligned regarding material actions with significant financial, legal, operational, labor, or reputational implications.
- Participate in Group-level management reviews and provide accurate performance updates.
Education
- University degree in Engineering, Chemistry, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline .
- MBA or postgraduate qualification is preferred.
- 15+ years of progressive professional experience , preferably within chemicals, manufacturing, mining, metals, or other heavy industrial environments.
- At least 5 years in a senior leadership position with significant operational, financial, and business responsibility.
- Previous experience as Managing Director, General Manager, Country Manager, Plant Director , or equivalent.
- Demonstrated experience with full P&L accountability .
- Proven track record in establishing, restarting, transforming, or scaling an industrial operation.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing, commercial management, cost management, supply chain, capital investment, and organizational development.
- Experience building organizations, management teams, and governance structures from the ground up.
- Experience in unionized and/or highly regulated industrial environments is strongly preferred.
- Strong strategic thinking combined with a highly practical and hands-on approach.
- Excellent leadership, decision-making, analytical, and problem-solving capabilities.
- Demonstrated ability to build teams, develop people, and establish a high-performance culture.
- Strong financial and commercial acumen, with the ability to balance short-term performance with long-term value creation.
- Strong stakeholder management capabilities, including experience engaging with headquarters, government authorities, regulators, employees, unions, customers, suppliers, and business partners.
- Ability to operate effectively in an environment characterized by transformation, ambiguity, and rapid change.
- Strong commitment to HSE, ESG, compliance, operational excellence, and responsible business practices .
- Native or fluent Spanish.
- Professional working proficiency in English , with the ability to communicate effectively with international stakeholders and Group Headquarters.
